What is an Accent Wall?

An accent wall (feature wall) is an interior or exterior wall that can have a different color, shade, design or material from the other walls adjacent to it. Ideally, an accent wall space is where your eyes are first drawn when you enter a room and they only have one thing to do – highlight a wall!

Tips for Planning an Accent Wall

• Follow the wall color rule: 60-30-10 to avoid overpowering the space. The majority of the room (60 percent) should be a neutral backdrop. Your secondary color can be applied to your accent wall and should make up about 30 percent. The final ten percent is left for your accent pieces, such as room accessories.
• We typically have a couple of options when selecting paint colors for an accent wall. Muted colors or bolder ones.

Muted Approach: We find choosing a deeper or lighter variant of the neutral color, already in the room, tends to look great. We find decorating success when the same color is used, just in a different saturation. If you like the subtle approach, when choosing a color for your accent wall, skip a couple of colors on the color chart from the base room color. Your choice can be lighter or darker.

Bolder Approach: Choosing a high-contrast color, from the neutral walls in the room, will provide that certain pop of color that you are looking for. A nice vibrant color will add dimension, depth and excitement to the room.

• If your goal is to create an accent wall with multiple colors, use painters tape to outline your design. Tape down your design, wait until the paint is fully dry, and pull off the tape carefully to reveal your vision.
• Its always best to stop and start the accent color on an inside corner, rather than an outside corner.
• Take into account the texture, light exposure, and architectural features of your accent wall. You want to choose a feature wall accent design that will

  compliment the attributions of your space.

Don’t think you have a contender for an accent wall? Don’t forget about the “fifth wall”, otherwise known as the ceiling. If your room has no common focal point, look up and infuse the ceiling with color.
